My name is Kristina Charles, CEO and Founder of LABAU, a same-day fashion delivery app.

LABAU was born from a childhood where convenience and access weren’t luxuries—they were dreams.

I grew up just above the poverty line. For most of my childhood, my family didn’t have a working car. If we needed something as simple as water, groceries, school supplies, or clothing, we relied on rides from relatives—or we climbed into the back of my father’s 18-wheeler and rode with him to the nearest store. That was our version of “transportation.”

When my sisters needed prom dresses, we didn’t shop online, and we didn't browse options—we waited until my dad’s payday, prayed it was enough, and rode in the back of that same tractor-trailer to get to the mall right before closing time. There was no e-commerce safety net. There was no same-day option. There were only delays, complications, and waiting.

Life on Labau Street meant surviving without things most people consider simple. For us, access wasn’t guaranteed—it was a blessing. There was no same-day delivery. No Uber. No DoorDash. No Instacart. If we needed a uniform shirt, school supplies, or a last-minute outfit, the answer wasn’t “order it.”

The answer was “wait… and hope we can get a ride.”

That reality shaped me.

It’s also where my innovation and love for fashion began. When you grow up with limited resources, you learn how to make something out of nothing. You learn creativity. You learn resilience. And you learn how deeply convenience—or the lack of it—affects your life.

LABAU is named after the address of my childhood home. The estate was built by my great-grandmother, Mamie, in the 1800s, a rare accomplishment for a Black woman at that time. That home held generations of births, losses, celebrations, and memories. It stood as a symbol of legacy and strength until it burned down in 2020, on the exact 95th anniversary of my grandmother’s (her daughter’s) passing. My family, unfortunately, lost everything.

Even after the fire, the frame never fell.

But the foundation remained.

Just like we did.

LABAU represents that foundation. That resilience. That refusal to fall.

It also represents the life I used to imagine. As a young girl with no money, I would browse luxury items online—not because I could buy them, but because they motivated me.

And it’s why LABAU exists today.

LABAU isn’t only for people who grew up as I did.
